📏 What is Nisab?

Nisab is the minimum amount of wealth you must own before Zakat becomes obligatory. If your total net wealth stays below Nisab, no Zakat is due. There are two thresholds:

Nisab basisWeightWhen it applies
Silver52.5 tola (612.36 g)Mixed assets — cash, gold, savings, etc. (the common case)
Gold7.5 tola (87.48 g)Only when gold is your sole zakatable asset

Because most people hold some cash along with gold, the lower silver Nisab is used — this is the more cautious view and benefits those eligible to receive Zakat. At a silver rate of around Rs 6,532 per tola, the Nisab works out to roughly Rs 343,000.

❓ Frequently asked questions

How much Zakat do I have to pay?
Zakat is 2.5% of your total net wealth (zakatable assets minus immediate debts), as long as that wealth is above the Nisab and has been held for one full lunar year.
Is Zakat due on gold jewellery I wear?
Under the view commonly followed in Pakistan, Zakat is due at 2.5% on the market value of gold and silver jewellery once your total wealth exceeds the Nisab — whether it is worn or stored. Some scholars differ, so follow the ruling you trust.
When should I calculate my Zakat?
Zakat becomes due when one lunar (Hijri) year passes on wealth that stayed above the Nisab. Many people fix a date — often 1 Ramadan — value their wealth that day each year, and pay then.
Do I deduct my debts?
Yes — immediate debts and payables due now (loans, unpaid bills, business payables) are deducted from your total before applying 2.5%. Long-term loans are usually counted only for the instalment due, so check with a scholar for large liabilities.
Is Zakat the same as the tax I pay to FBR?
No. Zakat is a religious obligation on wealth, separate from income tax. Paying FBR income tax does not discharge your Zakat, and Zakat is not deductible from your taxable income — though Zakat paid to approved funds can qualify for a tax credit under the law.
